Culpeper History
Chartered in 1749, Culpeper County was named for former colonial governor Lord Thomas Culpeper. That year, at the age of 17, George Washington was commissioned to survey and plot the Town and the County of Culpeper. The county and its residents played notable roles in America’s early wars, including raising the Culpeper Minutemen, a militia that fought in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
